I have found it to be a sharp lens. The depth of field at F/2.8 is very thin though. I often use live view on my camera with the 10x zoom mode to check focus, give that a try.

i have this lens and have been pretty disappointed with the softness when opened wide. I like to use it for concert photography where its usually pretty dark and i have to open up. it does seem to get accaptably sharp around f4 but any wider that that and shots just look straight out of focus!! at first i thought it was defective and sent it back to sigma for repair but they swore it was working properly. have you had a similar experience with softness? i haven't been able to find a lot of people online complaining about it...

awesome actions shots here, and thanks for the heads up about the Fstops/sharpness. i just bought one last night and wasn't too pleased with the sharpness while on P mode (it opened itself to the max of 2.8). hopefully limiting it will make it better. any idea why the sharpness goes DOWN while closed to 22 though? if you said it's sharp on 4.8, shouldn't it be even sharper on 22?

Used sparingly I think it makes for some interesting shots. I have used it in large venues before with good effect.
